Mitchell Creek Canyon Trail
A sunny trail with cactuses, boulders, and views on views on views.
On the east side of Castle Rock you’ll find all the canyons and boulders, making arguably some of the best hikes in Colorado! Mitchell Creek Canyon is one you definitely cannot sleep on.
This is a short hike that packs a punch in terms of views 😍 2.9 miles in and out gets your heart pumping just enough, especially with this rocky trail.
The trail starts paved and quickly turns to a dirt path, leading you to the creek inside the canyon. It’s wooded 🌳 and a little buggy after a rain, but this part of the trail is short lived! Soon after you’re ascending the canyon wall and walking cliff side.
It’s not a steep climb, it’s fairly gradual. My kids have been rocking this hike for a couple years now, so it’s doable!
⚠️The main watch out is the canyon edges! If you have a runner or a kid who likes to push boundaries (and buttons), you definitely need to be careful on this trail and watch them. There are no fences to keep them from cliff diving!
☀️ Sunscreen! You are directly in the sun most of the hike.
🐍 Watch for rattlesnakes!
🚽 There are NO restrooms.
🚗 If you look for the Mitchell Creek Canyon Trailhead in your search engine, it’ll bring you to a neighborhood with street parking. You can also enter through Gateway Mesa, where there is a parking lot (though I’ve never taken this route, but just an option!).
Add this hike to your list! If you’re feeling adventurous and want more for your day, Gateway Mesa and Castlewood Canyon are just minutes away 🥾
