DEVIL’S HEAD TRAIL & FIRE LOOKOUT ⛰
Sometimes I’m amazed how far out into the woods Douglas County extends. Devil's Head is a gem right here in our own county. We bring out of town guests to this hike, many times over traveling on I-70!
It wasn’t easy carrying my toddler up 900ft the first time we did this hike. But the view helps you escape from any of that discomfort 😄 Every switchback brought us to a new angle, a new view that we hadn’t seen previously. Up up up you go, and you see new formations, new mountains, new parts of Douglas County and beyond.
The first time we came here, the lookout tower was closed, so we climbed to the top of a giant Boulder to have a snack. This pushed all of us beyond our comfort zone...and it paid off ☀️ Just check out those views (wave to Pikes Peak off in the distance!).
The next time we did the hike, we experienced the lookout tower...believe me, those final stairs at the end of the hike are worth it! The view goes on forever in every direction, we love to try and look for our neighborhood. **Hold your kids' hands at the top, there's several rocks to climb on and easy to lose the path for kids who are runners!
On the way down the mountain, my oldest daugher talked about how she wants a “hiking sleepover” birthday with hikes and tents and a special mountain cake 🏔🎂 so this is a ringing endorsement!
Devil’s Head Trail is only an hour away from Castle Rock!
📍Located in Sedalia, CO
🗺 1.4 miles from the trailhead to the fire tower stairs, 2.8 in and out.
🥾 865ft elevation gain, bring shoes with a good grip since the trail is a bit rocky.
🚙 The narrow dirt road to the trailhead is a very bumpy, drive carefully!
🚽 Bathrooms at trailhead are open
🚗 Limited parking at trailhead, overflow lot nearby
🔥 Fire tower is over 50 years old, still in use, and on the National Register of Historic Places
